Scottish contemporary artist Niall Campbell Strachan has crafted a unique world where animals reign supreme. His vibrant, tribally adorned canvases often start with raw abstraction, gradually taking form into intriguing figures. His work is inhabited by a variety of fantastical creatures, each adding to the sense of mystery and depth. Interestingly, Strachan didn’t attend art school, and this independence has shaped his distinctive style. A self-taught artist with a passion for art history, he finds inspiration in the work of the Ninth Street Women, a group of female Abstract Expressionists who were often overshadowed by their male contemporaries. Like them, Strachan begins his process by working on the floor, allowing for free, instinctual movement as he lays down the abstract foundations of his pieces. This approach brings an organic energy to his work that is both emotional and expressive.
