Werfel’s current work, both in paintings and works on paper, explores the interplay of distinct voices. Her use of clear graphical lines and stencils contrasts with naturalistic gestures, creating layered compositions that evoke the fading of memories. This tension reflects the influence of Photoshop on modern visual culture. Inspired by her 2015 teaching stay in Singapore, Werfel began incorporating spray-painted stencils over gestural brush marks, using everyday textured materials and Chinese New Year decorations. In 2016, as a visiting artist at the American Academy in Rome, she drew inspiration from Baroque ceiling paintings, introducing spatial complexity into her work. Werfel’s art has been exhibited widely, with recent solo shows at American University of Paris, Drew University, NYC’s Prince Street Gallery, and Mondavi Winery. Her residencies include the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Center and Yosemite National Park. In 2017, she completed a public art commission for Burnett Miller Park in Sacramento.
